Weight today: 170.6
Started doing a workout program this week.
It's supposed to burn fat around your middle in 4 weeks.
Don't know if THAT exactly will happen, but it's exercise and I can feel my muscles working again, so it has to be a good thing.
If this really does seem to work out well, I'll post the original article from Men's Health magazine.

Weight today: 171.0
I've come to the understanding of what I do that causes the pounds to be added on, and what I would need to do to drop that last 5 pounds. I seem to be running at a pretty consistent 170 when I'm a "good boy". For the last 5 pounds I'm not so concerned, it would mean giving up some things I really enjoy, and for my height my weight isn't bad. What I'm more concerned with now is getting more active again.
Muscle weighs more than fat (as witnessed by the fact that when I was doing kung-fu I was pretty lean, but weighed closer to 180), and at this point I'd like to add some of that on, so keeping track of my weight gets to be a little pointless.
So this is going to drop to a Saturday only thing. Don't really need to get all obsessive about it either. Basically I want to get out and do stuff, and that will make me happy. And by doing these things I will gain more muscle, loose fat, and be more happy and want to do these things more! So there you go, an endless circle of hapiness, how often do you hear that?
See you next Saturday, and if there are any lurkers, drop me a line and say hello before I shut this down completely.

Weight today: 173.4
This is actually pretty impressive considering the pepperoni poutine I ate at about 1am last night. No regrets, it was awesome.
I have the swimming schedule for the local pool, going to start on Monday. It's not open as much as I had hoped, but on early schedule weeks I'm going to do 3 days a week, and on my late schedule it will hopefully be every day if possible (go before work). Going to avoid weekends since I saw how busy it was yesterday.
I've also been looking into other fat burning and cardio exercises, and interval training looks interesting. I've always been a traditional distance runner in the sense that I would start at a set speed and maintain it. From what I've read, interval training burns more fat because the output is higher, but you get the same energy usage because of the down times. Will try it and see, it can't hurt. Much.

Weight today: 175.6
Ate very bad food last night. Expect a Sunday morning spike, as there are some things that I'm not ready to give up (like the occasional KFC, not-so-occasion beer, chips & salsa). What's the point in getting in better health so you can live longer, if you're not going to live? Mind you, living longer is not even my goal here, probably contrary to my goal, but I'd at least like to be able to sprint up a flight of stairs and not feel short of breath.

Weight today: 175.2
My current goal is 165. We'll see how my pants fit then, but I may want to take it lower than that. I'd like to get in better physical shape too, and muscle weighs more than fat. A while ago I used to do kung-fu about 3 to 5 times a week (about an hour and a half at a time), and I was around 165/170 then, but very little fat. Would be nice to get there again.

Weight today: 175.8
Ate lots of junk yesterday, so this upswing is not very surprising. Will have to be a good boy today. I made an odd discovery yesterday. I've been eating trail mix at work, partly because I like it, partly because I figure it's better for me than a chocolate bar. Well, as much trail mix as I eat at one time (just a couple of small handfuls) is almost exactly the same on the nutritional chart as a Kit Kat. A lot more similar than I would have thought (calories, cholesterol, sodium, etc.). Thought the raisins and peanuts and stuff would have been better for me than that, will have to watch how much of it I eat (come to think of it, I ate a lot of that yesterday).

Weight today: 174.6
Off the diet, and look! My weight went down. Ate a smaller lunch (basically half of what they served me... don't worry, I'm not wasting food, I gave the rest to a co-worker). Had a fattening supper but had it early (and again, not too much), not too many snacks after that, and went out and expended some energy instead of sitting on the couch.

Weight today: 175.2
Minimal sugar water yesterday, no oil. Just made sure I watched what I ate (smaller lunch, no snacks during the day). That's it for Shangri La.
Reasons:
1) Not seeing any weight loss at all, when people have claimed they lost 5 pounds in 2 weeks or something like that.
2) More importantly than the weight loss, not feeling any less hungry - which is more of an indication that this isn't working. The author said that in the end he could get by with a normal lunch and a snack for supper.
3) I have to go to the bathroom all the freakin time. What's the point of feeling better about your weight if you always feel like you have to pee? (note: my daily water consumption has only gone up a slight ammount)
4) In his section about more ways of losing weight, he talks about eating bland food to help lower the set point. Umm, no. For a diet that claims you don't have to give anythng up, being encouraged to give up flavor to make it work is kind of a big thing.
5) Was skipping brushing my teeth in order to fit in the oil/sugar water. Dental health is more important than a few extra pounds, and the scheduling of this stuff with my work life was not working.
My new plan will be simple: eat less at a meal, don't snack, don't eat junk/eat better food, get more exercise.
I'm going to look for a website on nutrition, the four food groups, things like that.

Weight today: 175.4
Two double shots of oil yesterday instead of the sugar water, going to do the same today.
But, these results are less than thrilling to say the least.
I'm going to give it a little more time, but as I mentioned, I'm still feeling hungry and when I'm eating food there's nothing telling me I'm full any earlier before.
I can understand the theory of losing weight when you feel full faster, but when the cause is not happening, neither will the effect.
I think by this Friday if I'm not down to at least a stable 174 I'm going to give this Shangri La thing up and look into something a little more logical. Losing 1 pound in a week and a half is not an unreasonable request of a diet plan.

Weight today: 175.2
Actually thought it would be more today, ate some junk yesterday.
Still really hungry, and even though I drank a fair bit of water before this, I need to make trips to the bathroom more frequently now. Not liking that, I feel like a race horse.
Just realised it's the weekend and I left my sugar at work. Mind you, weekends it will be really hard to stick to the sugar stuff (you have to sip it, you can't chug it or your system goes "wtf???"). Couple of spoonfuls of oil should do it.

Weight today: 175.8
Nothing much to report except trying to time 2 spoonfulls of oil and 2 sugar drinks with an hour on each side of them is getting to be a pain in the ass (especially with brushing my teeth). Today I may try only doing the oil once, but a double dose. It's either that or I don't brush my teeth this morning (euch, no).

Weight today: 174.6
The creator of the diet said that I would know it's working when I don't feel as hungry. For the record, I haven't hit that yet. Skipped my daily chocolate bar yesterday, but more out of a lack of time with 2 meetings and planning on fitting the sugar water in at some point.
What has always made me a little cynical of "diets" in the past, is that people put all the emphasis on whatever they cut out of (or put into) their daily eating list. What I really think makes a diet work, ANY diet work, is the fact that anyone who is going on a diet is usually having a good hard look at what they're eating. They usually start some kind of light exercise plan, which quite often are the ones you stick with and they definitely help. Something I'm going to have to consider is if the weight loss is because of the sugar water and oil that I'm drinking, or is it because I'm actually paying attention to what I'm eating and when I'm eating it. Last night I stopped snacking at a certain time in order to leave the one hour buffer for my spoonful of oil. Ordinarily I wouldn't have cared and may have had chips a half hour before going to bed. And yeah, I know that's bad, but I didn't really care before.
At this point, I want to lose weight, and I don't care what diet plan you're on, Wendy's doesn't help that. Because I'm trying to lose weight, my brain is actively saying "don't eat crap - it's counterproductive". Getting out of the crap-eatting habit will be nice, and I don't think it'll take too much willpower. I eat McDonalds only rarely now, and I actually find it a little gross now (what's with all the salt? yeeeuuuchh!). The big test will be after I lose some weight I will stop the sugar and oil thing, and we'll see what happens to my weight after that.
So, here's do a little drop in my weight, and the hopes this is a continuing trend, no matter what is causing it!

Weight today: 175.4
I will accept that my body will take a while to get used to this, so I'm not expecting any real results for about a week, so I don't mind the slight increase from yesterday. But I ate better yesterday, no fast food, just a chocolate bar mid-day. Had fish and fruit for supper, salad and a chicken sandwich for lunch.
The thing I'm having the most trouble getting used to is planning when to do the oil or sugar water thing. It has to be 1 hour before and after any food (and this includes gum or toothpaste). There cannot be any flavour associated with the calories. Right now my plan is a tablespoon (15ml) of oil twice a day (total of 240 calories), and sugar water twice a day (90 calories total).
My goal is to drop down to about 160/165 (depending on the ammount of exercise I am getting at that point - muscle weighs more than fat).
Speaking of exercise, I'm avoiding elevators if at all possible, including work. I used to work on my feet and had a lot of carrying and lifting to do, and I never had a problem with fat back then (even though my diet was terrible). I also walked or bussed everywhere, and now have a car. I miss that natural exercise as I'm stuck at a desk again now.
Let's see what the rest of the week holds.

Hello World (Goodbye Fat)
Welcome to the Fatcave.
I am the Chunk Knight, the Pear-Shaped Crusader, in short I am... the Fatman.
This is a blog dedicated soley to keeping track of my efforts to get in better shape.
Currently I weigh in at 175.0 pounds (in pjs). I will be posting my weight almost daily, and maybe do a graph or two somewhere down the line.
I am going to put up a picture or two later as well, just to motivate me to get rid of the spare tire.
The first thing I am trying is the Shangri-La diet.
Basically it entails drinking unflavoured oil and sugar water to keep you from feeling hungry (it lowers the weight that your body wants to be... like the thermostat). If you lower your body weight set point, your body will not crave as many calories, and you will become full on less food. Hopefully it will keep the snacking and mid-afternoon chocolate runs down.
That's the theory at least, we'll see if it works.
Had some sugar water yesterday, and just had my first mouthful of oil today (really, not unpleasant, just odd to eat something slimy like that and not taste anything - but the tastelessness is the important part).
I'll keep you posted.
